Philosophers are the original masters of alchemy for they provide the mean between metaphysical and empirical realms in the process of understanding the nature of incommensurable worlds that interpenetrate, but do not touch. Their ancient craft is to reconcile the complexio oppositorum in the timeless ‘one-many’ problem. According to Herbert Silberer, in Problems of Mysticism and Its Symbols, the Persians “while they added much of their own to it, still were but the preservers of Greek-Hellenistic” and Eastern notions in the course of historically long syncretistic efforts (1917, 113). Sometimes, progress involves a return to retrieve forgotten treasures in the past. Shihäb al-Din al-Suhrawardi (1154-1191), a perennial thinker, detected a luminous thread at the philosophical nexus of multiple wisdom traditions, his aid to amplify unifying tendencies onto a systematic vision to reality itself. This presentation aims to recover the ‘complementarity’ of contraries in a new vantage point that draws from the mystical and mythical heart of the Middle East conjoined with contemporary directives. The hidden genius of this region, profoundly alive in Iran, endures and transmutes the tensions of the ongoing intellectual paradox that stimulates and defines our existence and never ceases to challenge us in the quest for higher knowledge. I suggest that, ultimately, the dyad is transcended in One Self.
